Mammalian DSP Process Engineering
Lonza is committed to sustainable long-term innovation, which is considered to be a cornerstone of business and supported at the highest level. Established in 2005, the DSP Process Engineering Group focuses on decreasing production costs and improving robustness through technological enhancements to and replacement of our existing generic purification platform. This is in response to the significant successes in increasing the titers of antibodies in our fermentation broths, the impact of which has been widely recognized by industry as the next greatest challenge facing the manufacture of recombinant proteins.

Our Team
The group consists of numerous top-notch scientists and engineers dedicated to technology development. As part of its function the DSP Process Engineering Group communicates across the whole of Lonza to take advantage of the experience available within the company, especially since Lonza's research and development is not limited to traditional options for bioseparations. The group maintains close ties with academia and is currently working with several prominent institutions.

Strategy
The group's strategy involves a number of key stages that include:
  • Identification of relevant technologies
  • Prioritisation based on assumptions of the new process’ operation combined in a detailed economic model
  • Experimental testing of the original assumptions using our own in-house antibody process
  • Where appropriate, undertaking further experiments to better understand the technology so that it is ready for comparison on customer projects alongside or after an existing development program.

Key to the group's success and that of Lonza's customers is the ability not only to identify viable alternatives, but to implement them within Lonza's manufacturing facilities. As such, the group's business model is centerd on the applicability of the new technologies to customer’s products as compared against the gold standard of current processes developed here at Lonza.

Current Status
The group is now at a stage where certain alternate unit operations are available for testing and have achieved significant advances in replacing a "traditional" monoclonal antibody purification process with one designed to be more robust and cost effective in today’s environment. Once fully evaluated internally, these processes will be available for use on customer projects.
