Temperate climate zones

In Europe, slug damage is a regular problem in oilseed rape and winter wheat crops. Also frequently affected are maize, sugar beet, sunflowers and potatoes. In the USA, slugs attack maize (corn), soya, sunflowers, lucerne and crops for grass seed production. In New Zealand, newly seeded meadows frequently suffer substantial slug damage. An increased slug density must be expected where ploughless cultivation with minimal tillage is employed.

Tropics

The apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) has spread rapidly through South East Asia and Japan following its introduction into these regions. It is capable of stripping bare a field of directly drilled rice in a matter of days. Fields with planted rice (traditional growing method) are less susceptible. Meta has been used successfully throughout the world to control these aquatic snails without any reports of adverse effects.

The giant African snail (Achatina fulica) has now spread across the entire tropical belt, causing major damage to crops of tropical fruits, ornamental plants and also in municipal parks. This snail also poses a health risk in these countries since it serves as an intermediate host of a meningitis pathogen. Samoa has had good experience of using Meta slug control preparations to control giant African snails.
