Which one of us has not suffered the disappointing experience of seeing the plants we tend so carefully in our own gardens falling victim to voracious slugs? Farmers and vegetable producers have enormous experience of these pests. They know that slugs can cause severe losses in a very short period of time. Less well known, however, is the fact that slugs can also cause significant damage in fish farms and artificial meadows.

Slug density varies from year to year according to the prevailing weather. Mild, damp weather conditions provide a favorable environment for slugs. The slug population is also affected by agricultural activities, particularly the type of soil cultivation. The increase in slug damage that has been observed in recent years is probably due to the increasing use of direct drilling methods. The permanent straw layer and undisturbed soil structures create better hiding places and additional feeding options for the slugs, thus increasing their chances of survival.
